Community InvolvementGrape Escape 2010On April 29, 2010 the Akron District Office Northeast Ohio Group will again be a part of the event planning and sponsorship for the Akron General Medical Center "Grape Escape". This annual wine and food tasting event which included a silent auction and prize drawings benefits the McDowell Cancer Center at the hospital. This year the Grape Escape celebrates it's 10th anniversary .This years event will be held at Fairlawn Country Club in Akron and for the third year in a row, be chaired by Jeff Wagner, financial representative with the Northeast Ohio Group. The event raised over $70,000 for the Cancer Center in 2009. The McDowell Cancer Treatment Center is a multidisciplinary program providing the latest cancer treatment to the residents of Northeast Ohio. Each year, the Cancer Center identifies more than 15,000 cancer cases and provides more than 36,000 procedures. The Center has enrolled up to 12 % of its patients into clinical trials, which far exceeds the national average of 4% for a community teaching hospital. Thanks A Trillion Care Package ProgramOn October 20, 2007, the Akron District Office of the Northeast Ohio Group partnered with the USO (United Service Organization) to host the "Thanks A Trillion Care Package Project" at the Akron Canton Armory. The Akron Office not only donated $5000 for items for the care packages, but also financial representatives, office staff, family and friends spent the day bagging items and packing and sealing boxes. Connie Phillips, the Care Package Coordinator for the USO of Northern Ohio, estimated that 450 to 500 boxes were packed by the Akron Office and were ready to ship to US troops deployed overseas. As part of Northwestern Mutual's company wide "Celebrate Life: Thanks A Trillion" program, each office of the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network has received money to celebrate the company milestone as the first direct provider of life insurance to reach 1 trillion dollars of individual life insurance in force. On deciding on a project for the "Thanks A Trillion" gift, it was overwhelmingly decided by the financial representatives and office staff that the most meaningful use would be to focus appreciation on the men and women from our community who are serving in the military and to be able to donate volunteer service as well as money. The USO care package program is an on going project that sends care package boxes filled with comfort items to the let the troops know that they are appreciated. This touch of home is a tremendous morale boost for those serving. Managing Director Daniel Leslie stated, "I am extremely proud of everyone who volunteered their time at the USO facility. We enjoyed a day of fellowship and community service and we were honored to be part of the USO program. It truly represents the spirit of our company"
